The International Civil Aviation Organization [ICAO] issued a statement to MH370Latest recently, confirming that standards set out by their Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) program are performance based only.
Airlines are only required to meet or surpass requirements set out by the organization, Chief of Communications Anthony Philbin said via email. He also confirmed that GADSS was created by ICAO “in conjunction with airline associations and others in response to the loss of MH370.”
“I can confirm for you that our standards in this area are performance-based rather than prescriptive, meaning that we do not mandate any specific technologies to meet the established GADSS performance requirements,” he said.
“A performance-based approach simply requires that the GADSS requirements must be met or surpassed by whatever solution a given airline may prefer.”
